Joe Giglio, the lawyer representing the family of the late Hugo Chetcuti, has claimed that the man charged with the Paceville mogul’s murder had been sacked from one of his establishments for being drunk at work.

Bojan Cmeilk, the Serbian national charged with Chetcuti’s murder, had reportedly been fired from one of Chetcuti’s establishments eight months before he allegedly stabbed him last week.

Giglio revealed details of the firing during a heated discussion with Caroline Muscat, the editor of the TheShiftNews, on a Facebook post where Ms Muscat called Chetcuti a “drug lord”.

Dr Giglio called her out, saying she was “talking rubbish”.

“Facts so far are that his murder was done by a mentally disturbed and disgruntled employee who was sacked for being drunk while at work,” he said.

He went on to address some of the other comments being made about Hugo Chetcuti, including about his cash flow and about how bouncers outside his nightclubs allegedly deal in cocaine.

“His bouncers, as you refer to them, are not his but security is subcontracted to a firm which has no connection to him,” Giglio said. “In any case even if this were not the case your idea of complicity is worrying and the conclusions you jump to even more so.”

“You are also not aware of his financial commitments and his exposure with the banks. Unless of course for you getting loans is an act of money laundering. In any case even if all your points were not so irretrievably incorrect, it still would not make him a drug lord let alone give you a right to come to such ridiculous conclusions on the basis of incorrect assumptions,” he said.

Dr Joe Giglio and Sara Mifsud are appearing parte civile while Ishmael Psaila is providing legal aid.

Illum.com.mt had reported that Bojan Cmelik had been fired about 8 months ago, and as far as the Hugo Group knew, there was no animosity between them.

When Cmelik walked into the pre-launch opening of Hugo Chetcuti’s new Hugo’s Seafood and Cocktails restaurant, Chetcuti reportedly greeted Bojan with a hug, whereupon Cmelik stabbed Chetcuti, and attempted to flee before being caught with the use of tasers.

He succumbed to his wounds, which became infected, after six days in hospital. Some of Malta’s most prominent chefs, artists and businessmen have expressed their anguish over his death, and his son has vowed to continue his legacy.
