Hundreds gathered for the funeral of nursing aide Joseph Grech, who died after being hit by an ambulance while walking near Mater Dei a few days ago.

Early this morning, the Immaculate Conception Parish Church in Bormla was full to the brim for the ceremony, which was followed by a procession by Cospicua’s St George’s Band Club, which saw huge crowds of people attending.

Earlier, many of Joseph’s colleagues gathered near Mater Dei’s mortuary where they paid tribute to the nursing aide and bid him farewell.

The 48-year-old from Cospicua lost his life on Saturday after being hit by an ambulance near Mater Dei at around 5pm.

Another victim of the accident, a 54-year-old Romanian woman, was grievously injured.

Grech was also recognised for his contributions to the musical and cultural sector, where he was a choir member and participated in activities in his hometown.

A day after Joseph passed away, Maestro Hermann Farrugia Frantz took to social media to bid his friend farewell, writing, “You were supposed to be singing with us in Ħal-Tarxien”.

Joseph’s wife, Lorraine Aquilina, also took to social media to write several heartfelt messages about her husband, describing him as “jovial, impulsive, and loud,” but mostly, “with a great devotion to the Holy Mary and the Lord”.

“Rest in peace Joseph, and help me continue raising our treasure from up above,” she wrote, referring to their child.

Rest in peace, Joseph.
