The Water Services Corporation announced that it was forced to close down operations at the Gozo sewage plant yesterday due to an illegal discharge of animal waste.

This has resulted in blockage of the plant, resulting in severe damage to expensive machinery used to produce new water that is being distributed to farmers.

A waste plant spokesperson said: “Sewage infrastructure is very complex and delicate and that such infrastructure is damaged through the improper use of the urban sewer system. It is therefore very important that only human toilet waste and degradable toilet paper are discharged in the system.”

The situation was expected to be stabilised by early this morning.

They are in the process of gathering all information to hand over to the police.

You can report and suspicious activities or issue to the Corporation via phone: 80076400, email: [email protected], the website’s live chat or through Facebook.
