Have you ever entered a car park, found a spot all by yourself, parked all by yourself, and then got out of your car to hear “OK?” along with the jingling of coins? Being harassed by parkers is an annoyance that seems to come with most public car park in Malta. While some parkers can be friendly and helpful, others can be less so.

But one parker who was caught repeatedly harassing drivers for tips turned out not to be a parker at all after authorities found he did not have an official Transport Malta tag, and was posing as one to score a bit of extra cash.

The imposter parker was fined €500 for lying in a Valletta car park, and was banned for returning to that car park for six months. If he does return to the car park, he risks imprisonment, said Magistrate Joe Mifsud.

It turns out that Transport Malta had known about the man and tried repeatedly to get him to leave, but he kept coming back for more tips. They had even opened up two court cases against him, but in both cases he just ignored the court orders.

“Transport Malta is satisfied by the court’s decision that rewards the Authority and the Malta Police force’s efforts in protecting drivers in public car parks,” a Transport Malta statement said.

“Transport Malta takes reports seriously and has stepped up its clamp down on parking area-related illegal activities.”

This is not the only wannabe-parker that has been caught hustling for tips from people trying to park their car outside Valletta, with the authorities “proceeding in court against two other individuals, who have committed similar offences in other public parking areas.”
