The daughter of a recently deceased PN Pembroke councillor has taken up the local council seat vacated by her mother, pledging to continue from where her mother left off.
Evelyn Vella Brincat, known for her activism in favour of women’ rights and animal’s rights, passed away last August after years of battling against cancer. Her death triggered a by-election in the Pembroke local council, but since no candidate put their name forward, the minority leader was empowered to co-opt a new councillor.
And this new councillor was none other than Vella Brincat’s own daughter Desiree, a 30-year-old pharmacist and medical student.
“In recent months and years, I used to hear my mother talking about the local council and about all the important work it does,” she told NET News. “Seeing as we used to live together, I used to follow her work closely and I know how interested she was in animals’ rights, the environment and Pembroke. I want to continue from where she left off so that we can all have a better Pembroke.”
Nickie Vella de Fremeaux, whose husband is PN leader Adrian Delia, praised Desiree for her decision.
“I’m here to second you wherever you need to continue where in where you beautiful Mummy and my dearest friend Evelyn Vella Brincat left off,” she said. “I honestly shed a tear seeing this. You made my day.”
