A bus driver lost control and hit a central strip in Attard last night, causing the public transport bus to overturn on top of a parked car. The accident happened at around 11:30pm during a particularly rainy night.

The whole thing reportedly woke up residents in the area of Mdina Road and Triq Ħal Warda where the accident occurred.

TVM reported that the road was closed until the bus was turned over and the wreck was cleared by Members of the Civil Protection Department. Eyewitnesses said the laborious task took several hours. 

In a statement issued this morning, Malta Public Transport confirmed that no passengers were onboard and no one was injured in the accident. The driver was thankfully only slightly injured, and Malta Public Transport said that he was already being treated for shock after being admitted to hospital. 

An internal investigation was also immediately launched to identify the cause of the accident, with the internal CCTV system being currently checked.

Malta Public Transport also quoted a “consistent year-on-year reduction” in the number of accidents over the last three years. 

“The company has, in fact, implemented various measures to this effect including, most importantly, a significant investment in the training programme for drivers,” Malta Public Transport told the Times of Malta. “The company has also introduced a programme whereby it rewards drivers with a consistent, positive track record in safe driving by promoting these drivers to ‘advanced drivers’.”
