Somewhere between 10 and 11 tonnes of cannabis were discovered in a cargo ship coming from Syria and headed to Libya this morning. The shipment of cannabis was the largest ever discovered in Malta, and were found in four containers at the Malta Freeport, ostensibly in containers carrying pails of crockery detergent and blow-torches.
“The containers, which were transiting through Malta on their way from Syria to Libya, were flagged as ‘potential high risk containers’ following risk analysis performed by the Malta Customs Container Monitoring Unit. All four containers were scanned by the ZBV backscatter scanner, and subsequently by the Nuctech x-ray scanner. In both occasions, all pails of detergent produced inconsistency in the image. Upon physical inspection, Customs officials uncovered bundles of brown substance hidden within the detergent. Following a narcotics field-test, conducted by Customs officials, there was a positive indication for cannabis resin,” said the Customs Department.
Initial indications suggest that the quantity of cannabis resin detected amount to circa 10,000 kilograms (10 tonnes) to 11,000 kilograms (11 tonnes), with a street value of at least €28.5 million.
However, the photos of the drug bust show just how much weed was caught, better than any numbers can. Have a look at the official images of the drug bust below, and let us know what you think should happen to the confiscated cannabis.
