Infrastructure Malta has announced plans to upgrade the infrastructure and enhance traffic flow in the areas of Barrani, Ħal Tarxien, and Bulebel.

A more efficient transport network for drivers is set to be implemented, leading to safer roads. The plans are currently being discussed by the Ministry and interested parties, including local councils, with the goal of implementing them before the next scholastic year, the Ministry for Infrastructure has said.

The initiative will address five junctions in these areas and introduce a new integrated traffic light system to improve traffic management. This aims to create better direct connections between villages, subsequently reducing traffic in village centres.

The road exit from Ħal Tarxien to Triq Tal-Barrani, heading towards Valletta and Birżebuġġa, will remain unchanged, as will the current route from Triq il-Palma.

Meanwhile, the exit from Ħal Tarxien towards Fgura, Ħaż-Żabbar, and Żejtun will no longer be interrupted due to the removal of traffic lights and the addition of another lane, increasing the number of lanes in this direction from two to three.

Access will be provided to vehicles travelling from Birżebbuġa/Żejtun to Triq il-Gudja in Ħal Tarxien. In the meantime, the exit from the junction to Birżebbuġa will remain unchanged.

Meanwhile, commuters travelling from Żabbar and Fgura to Santa Luċija and Valletta will take Triq Ħal Tarxien and Triq tal-Ħotba before merging onto Triq il-Barrani, passing by St James Hospital.

Tal-Barrani Road serves as a crucial connection for the localities of Tarxien, Fgura, Żabbar, Żejtun, Għaxaq, and the Bulebel industrial estate. It also functions as a vital link to Marsaxlokk and Birżebbuġa.

Despite a large reservoir nearby, a section of this road is prone to flooding during rainfall.

Infrastructure Malta has not yet specified a start date for the works.
