Instagram ‘Vigilantes’ On Quest To Expose Malta’s Lawlessness

It is common to hear Maltese people complaining that the law of the jungle reigns supreme on the island. And now a group of anonymous people have taken it upon themselves to investigate just how bad the state of lawlessness is, opening an Instagram page aptly named ‘GahanMalti’ (after Malta’s folk character Ġaħan) on which they are exposing examples of the ‘everything goes’ mentality.

“Six people spent three days walking three kilometres and produced over 1,000 photos showing this country has no rules,” the person behind ‘gahanmalti’ told LovinMalta. “We intend to keep on exposing this reality until something concrete is done.”

“What’s confusing is our nation should be against all this since we are all suffering but, to be honest, we don’t think the government has the general public’s best interests on its agenda or something would have been done already.”

The pictures so far mainly focus on littering, illegal parking, the encroachment of tables and chairs on pedestrian areas, and abandoned houses they say should be renovated before development proceeds onto virgin land.

However, the account holder said he also plans to expose VAT abuse, tax evasion, undeclared work and “tons of other abuses”.

“We want a cleaner, respectful Malta where laws aren’t just a suggestion but enforced,” he said. “If every person who gets a fine or suspended sentence from court instead gets one hour of community service for each euro fined, then we would have a clean Malta within a month.”
