‘It Left Me Uneasy’: Polyclinic Patient Found Out He Was Registered As Dead, Jason Azzopardi Warns
In a recent Facebook post, lawyer and former PN MP Jason Azzopardi revealed a troubling message he received from a Maltese citizen.
The individual recounted a bizarre and unsettling experience at a polyclinic, where he discovered that his identity card had been mistakenly registered as deceased.
The message read:
“Good morning, Jason. I saw your recent post about the theft of ID cards. A few months ago, I needed to visit the polyclinic, but when I presented my ID card, I was informed that I had been registered as dead since March 2024. I went to the hospital’s medical records department and was ‘resurrected’ on paper. I was told it was just a mistake, but it left me uneasy—if I hadn’t needed to visit the polyclinic, all my files could have been disposed of after a few months. Even more strangely, during the time I was ‘registered as deceased,’ I traveled abroad, voted, and paid my taxes as usual.”
“I don’t know if this is related to the case you’re mentioning, but it certainly feels like there’s a connection. Perhaps there’s a way to check if someone else has entered the hospital under my name? I never received any documentation from Mater Dei about this issue. Thank you for your good work!”

This shocking incident has added another layer of concern to the already alarming allegations surrounding Malta’s identity card system.
Azzopardi, who recently requested a magisterial inquiry into what he describes as the country’s largest corruption scandal involving fraudulent identity cards, suggested that such cases might be more widespread than previously thought.
The inquiry, which is set to begin if no appeal is filed, could potentially uncover a systemic problem within Malta’s identification and records systems.
Azzopardi’s call for citizens to come forward with similar experiences has been echoed by many, as the island grapples with the implications of this scandal.
