‘It Looks Bad And Smells Even Worse’: Concerned Citizen Calls For Action Regarding Questionable Water Conditions At Santa Luċija Chinese Gardens

The Chinese Garden of Serenity in Santa Luċija has seemingly been left in a questionable state, prompting concern for the ponds’ ecosystem.
A concerned citizen contacted Lovin Malta with photos and videos taken two days ago, showing foam and bubbles on the surface of the green waters.
“The water conditions are very bad and it looks and smells even worse,” the resident told the newsroom, “It’s worrying, as you can see there are still animals in and around the water.”
The Santa Luċija Local Council issued a statement on Facebook yesterday regarding the situation claiming that “the conditions are not harmful or dangerous.”
“Meanwhile, we are in constant contact with the Public Works Department to ensure that the water in the pond gets cleaned, its temperature regulated and everything goes back to normal.”
Since its opening in 1997, the gardens have been a local attraction, hosting a multitude of events and being a tranquil location to visit in general. Unfortunately, reports such as these are not the first, as back in 2020, similar complaints were made regarding the upkeep of the gardens.
Lovin Malta has reached out to the Santa Luċija Local Council for an update.
