A basketball coach was held in custody after being accused of sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl who is part of a Maltese team that was playing in Italy.

The incident reportedly happened between the 3rd and 10th of July. The minor, whose name has been banned from publication, alleged that her Italian coach closed in on her, kissing, and touching her intimately.

The suspect pleaded not guilty to abusing his power by engaging in intimate behaviour without her permission, subjecting her to acts of a sexual nature and causing fear.

However, the defence requested bail saying that the alleged crime happened a month ago in Italy. Moreover, they argued, the minor had posted photos of her body just hours before.

Questions arise on how photos of a minor connect to being assaulted hours after.

Still, the suspect remains remanded in custody and all names are banned from publication.
