Members of the Maltese-Syrian community have handed out extra fish collected from the roads of Xemxija after a severe storm washed up a large amount of sea bream onto the island.

Many people headed to Xemxija in the severe gale force winds to collect some free fish, leading to an number of comments from the public.

Now, a prominent member of the Maltese-Syrian community, Omar Rababah, has taken to Facebook to explain that some of the fish were given out to vulnerable families, in the spirit of caring for your community.

He took to Facebook to explain why the community were giving out the collected fish to families in need

“I’ve spoken to members of the Syrian Community in Malta after some comments regarding the fish that were in Xemxija. It’s better the fish were collected rather than be left in the street and squashed under cars.”

“They informed me that they collected a good amount of sea bream, and have given them out to whoever they knew to be in need. Among these are vulnerable families who can’t really eat fish due to their finances.”

“This is the beauty of a united spirit in a community.”

“Today I feel like many people have become individualistic where everyone thinks for their own stomach without a social conscience.”

“When I was young and I would visit my grandmother, neighbours would oftentimes knock for a tin of corned beef or for some milk and it wouldn’t be the first time my grandmother sent me to my neighbours for a tin of tuna if she was caught without it.”

“Before, everyone thought of everyone else… and that’s what these people have done thanks to the sea bream.”

“The people offered to buy them from them, but they refused because they considered the fish as blessings from God for those who need. This means that they aren’t truly starving as some people said.”

“Let’s strengthen the community spirit in our community.”

Malta was treated to Biblical scenes over the weekend as dozens of people headed to Xemxija to pick up fish that were washed onto the street after gale force winds and a storm wrecked local fish farms.

A large amount of sea bream were sent flying onto the two-lane road as cars attempted to make their way home in the severe weather – if they weren’t double parking to grab a quick fish as well, that is.

Indeed, a full day after the Great Xemxija Feeding Frenzy of 2019, people are still out there, risking life and limb for some relatively fresh, free fish.
