Justice Delayed: Three Years Since Chantelle Chetcuti’s Brutal Murder And No One Is In Prison

Exactly three years ago, Chantelle Chetcuti was brutally murdered after she was stabbed in the head outside a club, with her ex-partner Justin Borg considered to be the main suspect.

However, justice has yet to be served and the courts have even allowed Borg to go on holiday to watch a Champions League football match in Milan.

Chetcuti, a 34-year-old mother of two, was stabbed in the head on February 3rd 2020, outside a Żabbar club.

Witnesses said she had been playing billiards inside the club while enjoying a drink with a male friend when Borg walked inside and asked Chetcuti to speak to him outside. Minutes later, a passer-by entered the bar and screamed for help after spotting Chetcuti on the floor with a knife stuck in her head.

She succumbed to her head injuries in hospital.

Later that evening, Borg turned himself into police headquarters in bloodstained clothes with cocaine on his person. He pleaded not guilty to the murder and was eventually granted bail, nine months after the murder.

Media coverage of the case against Borg has dwindled down since then but the case is still ongoing and the trial has yet to commence.

Last year, Lovin Malta reported that Borg had gone on holiday in October 2022 to watch a Champions League match between Milan and Chelsea at the San Siro stadium, after receiving permission from the courts to leave the country.

Chetcuti was one of 44 women who were murdered in the past 22 years, 29 of which were considered to be femicides.

While the majority of murderers in the last five years have been sentenced, it is hugely worrying that some are yet to be closed.

Sion Grech’s family had to wait 18 years after she was murdered at 20 for the trial against the suspected murderers to conclude.

Still, the Grech family, much like those of Chantelle Chetcuti, Paulina Dembska, Bernice Cassar, and most recently, Pelin Kaya are still waiting for justice.
