‘Justice Prevailed’: Sliema Mayor Wins Data Protection Case After Recording Public Urination And Assault

Sliema Mayor John Pillow recently won a data protection case that was filed against him after recording a group of public urinators who later assaulted him.
This comes after Pillow was attacked back in June 2022, after he called out a group of foreigners who were publically urinating on the beach of Qui-Si-Sana.
Upon his intervention, he was met with a string of profanities and had a coke bottle thrown at his face when he started recording, causing him a black eye.
Footage showing the exact moment the mayor was attacked had also been exclusively shared with Lovin Malta.
“After I was attacked by a group of foreigners who were urinating in public at a bay in Qui-Si-Sana, where I suffered injuries from a metal can thrown at me, I was reported to the Information and Data Protection Commissioner for alleged infringement of the group data protection when I captured on video the accident and following episodes,” Pillow said on social media.
“The commissioner rightly so investigated the case and today I received the judgment whereby the claims against me were dismissed, and the commissioner stated:
In the light of the foregoing, the Commissioner hereby decides that the processing activity undertaken by the controller does not infringe the provisions of article 6(1)(a) of the Regulation and, consequently the complainants’ claim is being dismissed in its entirety.”
“I would like to thank Dr. Jean Paul Sammut LL.D. my legal advisor and his team who defended me throughout, The Malta Police Force my colleagues at the Sliema Local Council, and the general public for their continuous support and solidarity,” Pillow said.
Following the incident, the mayor called for an increase in police presence in the Sliema area, warning of the dangerous nature of certain encounters.
