‘Justice Protest’ For JeanPaul Sofia And Victims Of Deadly Construction Industry Called By Moviment Graffiti
A protest to demand justice for all the victims of the construction industry has been called by Moviment Graffitti, two months after JeanPaul Sofia was found buried under the debris of a collapsed building in Corradino.
It will be held on Saturday 4th February at 11am, in front of the Ministry for Public Works and Planning, Floriana.
The activist group warned that the suffering and deaths caused by construction are not simply incidents, but “the result of an industry which lacks any serious regulation” that has led to serious weekly accidents and deaths at construction sites.
“There cannot be justice for JeanPaul Sofia and all the other victims of construction as long as the profits of developers continue to be given predominance over the health and lives of workers and residents,” the group wrote.
JeanPaul Sofia, 20, tragically died when a construction site collapsed on 3rd December and it took CPD officials 15 hours to retrieve his body from the rubble.
While a police investigation has been launched, no one has been charged in court.
Nationalist MP Jerome Caruana Cilia has even called for a public inquiry into the death of JeanPaul Sofia, insisting that he “can’t have died for nothing”.
Meanwhile, Malta’s construction sector remains the deadliest to work in, with 90% of work-related deaths connected to the industry. Seventeen people died between 2019 and 2021.
It seems that little is being done to address the issue, with resources unable to meet demand.
