Less than 10 days into 2019, and Malta has already had its first drug bust of the year.

A Nigerian woman had her belongings flagged at the Malta International Airport as she arrived from Treviso. Something must have smelt fishy though, because her belongings were instantly flagged after going through the X-ray machine.

After being searched, five plastic wrapped packets were found on her which she claimed were dried fish. However, turned out to be a kilo of cannabis detected by the narcotics field test.

The passenger was arrested after the Police Anti-Drug Squad were notified and the investigation is pending. She is expected to be arraigned in court later on today.

2018 was a record-breaking and impressive year for Malta Customs in terms of drug busts.
