Liam Debono, the 17-year-old Maltese teenager accused of attempting to murder Police Constable Simon Schembri, has reportedly been hospitalised after being beaten up by a gang of up to five men.

The beating happened near his workplace in the Industrial Zone in Luqa, a shop, and allegedly resulted in Liam suffering wounds and cuts to his face, the Malta Independent reported.

Lovin Malta has confirmed that the beating took place, though Debono’s exact condition remains unconfirmed.

Debono is currently out on provisory bail as he is still being tried for the attempted hit-and-run of PC Schembri.

The attack, which shocked Malta, led to PC Schembri’s arm being amputated after severe injuries left him fighting for his life, and has caused endless discussions in Malta about how the case, which involves a 17-year-old, should be handled.

Just last week, TVM’s Xarabank received a gagging order after the show announced it was planning to air an interview with Liam Debono.
