Lidl Malta reaffirms its commitment to combating food waste with the launch of its “Food  Saving Bag”, a project that restores value to fruits and vegetables that are imperfectly shaped, but are still perfectly good and safe to eat, or with slightly damaged packaging.

The initiative, which involves all 10 local Lidl stores, will offer the brand’s customers the opportunity to join the fight against food waste by purchasing these special bags of perfectly edible fruits and vegetables that do not meet the company’s commercial standards anymore.

“As a supermarket chain, we can play an important role in the fight against food waste, a topic very dear to us which we have already been addressing for many years with numerous initiatives,” comments Marie-Clare Church, Communication & CSR department Lidl Malta. “Thanks to our Food Saving Bag, we intend to promote more conscious consumption and raise awareness among our customers who, in fact, have been able to grasp the spirit of the initiative and show their appreciation from the very beginning.”

The Food Saving Bags are handpicked daily by store staff after a careful selection of products and are placed inside a dedicated cart in the area behind the checkouts. The number of bags available at each store varies depending on the daily availability of suitable products. Each Food Saving Bag contains 4 kg of fruits and vegetables and can be purchased at a discounted price of 3 euro.

For every bag purchased, €0.50 will be donated to Caritas Malta, a Maltese NGO providing food and essential services to people in need.
