At least 97 migrants were rescued by the Armed Forces of Malta late Monday night and brought to the island early this morning.

The migrants were rescued during a Search and Rescue Operation in Maltese waters. The AFM patrol boat P61 brought the migrants to Hay Wharf in Floriana this morning at 6:40am.

After disembarking, immigration police took custody of the migrants, who entered police buses and were taken to the Marsa Open Centre. While there, each migrant was given a full-body search, had their fingerprints taken and were photographed.

AWAS Agency also gave the migrants food and basic essentials.

This latest group of migrants follows last Wednesday’s 370 migrants who arrived on the island in one day.

Early reports indicate that some of the migrants may be Nigerian, but authorities have yet to fully confirm where they come from.
