Officials at the Malta Customs Department last night seized roughly 40kg of cocaine travelling from Ecuador to Cyprus. The container it was stored in was selected for scanning following risk analysis carried out by the Department's Container Monitoring Unit.

The department seized 35 packets of cocaine that were hidden beneath a panel inside a refrigerated container. The estimated street value of the drugs reaches up to €4.5 million. The substances were identified using the new Nuctech scanner that had been installed earlier this year.

2018 seems to have proved to be a busy year for the Malta Customs Department as well as the Police Anti Drug Squad. Multiple drug busts have taken place between January and now, including a record breaking bust of €28 million worth of cannabis in September.
