The Special Olympics World Games 2023 ended on an exciting high note for Malta, with the nation earning the highest number of gold medals it has ever won in these games.
The Maltese contingent won with a record 16 gold medals as the games concluded in Berlin, Germany, on 25th June.
Malta’s exceptional performance spanned across a range of seven sports disciplines, including athletics, bocce, bowling, cycling, swimming, golf, and table tennis.
The Maltese athletes distinguished themselves not only in winning gold but also in securing an impressive total medal haul of 32, with an additional 11 silver and 4 bronze medals to their credit.
The achievement comes on the back of a total of 45 different sports events in which the Maltese athletes competed, consisting of 22 athletes and 5 unified partners.
Beyond their sports victories, the Maltese delegation also made its mark through its participation in the Global Youth Leadership Summit and the Global Athletes Congress, integral parts of the Special Olympics 2023 World Games program. These platforms provided the Maltese athletes with a unique opportunity to share experiences and perspectives with other participants from across the globe.
Significant performances emerged from athletes like Gareth Borg and Luke Burke who each clinched 3 gold medals in cycling and bowling, reflecting their skill, determination, and commitment to excellence. Their efforts stand testament to Malta’s increasing prominence in the world of sports.
Lydia Abela, President of Special Olympics Malta, hailed the Maltese contingent’s success at the games. She applauded the athletes for their commitment, dedication, and the spirit of inclusivity they exemplified.
“Society wins when it acknowledges and gives value to each and every one within it. The Special Olympics World Games are a celebration and a live testament to inclusivity, where different abilities unite through sport towards a common goal, that everyone is a protagonist.”
