Remember the little crab from the LM0.05c coin? Well, he’s just been given one of Malta’s highest honours for animals – and it’s way overdue.

The Maltese freshwater crab (Qabru) and the Mediterranean killifish (Bużaqq) have just been declared national invertebrate and national fish of Malta respectively, the Environment and Resources Authority announced.

Calling these two little critters national “ambassadors”, the two species now join the likes of our national bird, plant, and tree.

Alongside the blue rock thrush (merill), the sandarac gum tree (siġra tal-għargħar), and rock centaury (widnet il-baħar), the killifish and the Maltese crab will now enjoy protected status.

Under the new Species Protection Regulations, the new law gives authorities the power to fine up to €5,000 per animal.

Now that the freshwater crab has been declared the national invertebrate of Malta, it’s only a matter of time before globigerina limestone is declared the national stone of Malta.
