Malta Ranks 13th On Yale’s Environmental Performance Index, Scoring High In Marine Protection And Climate Change Mitigation
Yale and Columbia University’s prestigious annual Environmental Performance Index (EPI) sees 180 countries scored on multiple environmental factors, with Malta standing at 13th place in the overall global rankings.
Each country is given a score for 58 indicators across 11 issue categories, ranging from climate change mitigation to waste and ecosystem management.
Among the main categories – with a score of 65.6 – Malta ranked 30th on the Ecosystem Vitality index in which it ranked 15th in the Marine Habitat Protection subcategory and first place in the Marine ‘Key Biodiversity Areas’ subcategory with a near-perfect score of 99.3.
In terms of overall climate change mitigation, it was placed in eight place with a score of 63.6, just between eco-friendly titans Germany and Sweden.
However the word on everyone’s lips is the score for drinking water quality standing at 95.3, landing it in 19th place, similar to 2023’s perfect score of 100 that raised a few eyebrows.
Contrastingly, the Index highlights some of Malta’s struggles as well.
The production of wastewater, landed Malta in 162nd place with a low score of 18.5 and overall standing in 60th place for the Water Resources category.
Similarly, with a 27.1 score in the overall waste management category, Malta ranks in 119th place, with a 14.7 score for the Waste Generate Per Capita subcategory.
Despite excelling in marine protection and climate efforts, the index highlights obvious struggles with waste management and water resource efficiency, among many other fields.
