A total of €1,445,665 was raised for Dar tal-Providenza during yesterday’s traditional New Year’s Day telethon for the Siġġiewi home that houses people with disabilities.

For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual Festa ta’ Ġenerożità was broadcast from a big tent that was set up in the home’s parking lot.

Proceedings kicked off with a mass by Archbishop Charles Scicluna, in which he prayed for peace and urged people to cherish life from conception, an ostensible reference to the abortion bill that is currently being discussed in Parliament.

Several high-profile people were in attendance, including President George Vella and his wife Miriam, Auxiliary Bishop Mgr Joseph Galea-Curmi, President Emeritus Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, Opposition Leader Bernard Grech and his wife AnneMarie.

Prime Minister Robert Abela wasn’t present but was represented by National Heritage Minister Owen Bonnici, who presented a €25,000 donation form the state’s Good Causes Fund.

An art auction once again took place, raising over €29,000.

Dar tal-Providenza director Fr Martin Micallef thanked the people of Malta for their generosity and expressed his hope that this solidarity will continue throughout the year with all those in Maltese society who need support.

The telethon’s final sum of €1,445,665 is slightly higher than the €1,409,085 that was raised last year.
