Malta will host the upcoming Ukraine Peace Formula meeting at the end of this month, as requested by Ukraine’s Presidential office.

“It was easy for the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade to say yes when approached by Ukraine’s Presidential Office,” a statement by the ministry reads. 

The talks will continue the work established in Copenhagen in June 2023 and in Jeddah in August 2023.

Foreign Minister Ian Borg described the holding of next week’s talks as “the most concrete support that a country like Malta can provide for keeping the Ukrainian cause high on the international agenda.”

“Malta supports the Ukrainian cause by taking a principled position at various multilateral fora and also by providing humanitarian aid and assistance.”

In the coming months, the ministry will continue to remain committed to diplomatic outreach in support of Ukraine’s efforts toward achieving peace within its internationally recognised borders.

It also aims to secure the broadest possible international support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s Peace Formula presented to the G20 in November 2022.

This peace formula involves a 10-point plan aimed at restoring long-lasting peace in Ukraine. These steps are:

• Radiation and nuclear safety, focusing on restoring security around Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine, which is now Russian-occupied.
• Food security, including protecting and ensuring Ukraine’s grain exports to the world’s most poverty-struck nations.
• Energy security, with a focus on price restrictions on Russian energy resources, as well as aiding Ukraine with restoring its power infrastructure, half of which has been damaged by Russian attacks.
• Release of all prisoners and deportees, including war prisoners and children deported to Russia.
• Restoring Ukraine’s territorial integrity and Russia reaffirming it according to the UN Charter.
• Withdrawal of Russian troops and the cessation of hostilities, the restoration of Ukraine’s state borders with Russia.
• Justice which includes the establishment of a special tribunal to prosecute Russian war crimes.
• The prevention of ecocide, and the protection of the environment, with a focus on demining and restoring water treatment facilities.
• Prevention of an escalation of conflict and building security architecture in the Euro-Atlantic space, including guarantees for Ukraine.
• Confirmation of the war’s end, including a document signed by the involved parties.
