Malta’s Pepe Community Called Out In Spanish VOGUE Travel Guide

Writers over at VOGUE Spain noticed Malta’s infamous pepe community, giving them a notable shout out in a recent exclusive travel guide of our very island.

The article, doesn’t seem to be just another mediocre travel guide that talks about the most touristic places on the Maltese island.

Towards the end of the article, when discussing the bilingual capabilities of the Maltese population, the writer referred to the pepe community as “the upper classes,” stating that “even if they know Maltese, they even communicate with each other in English.”

It would seem like, while innocent, even critics overseas have gotten on the bandwagon of taking playful jabs at the pepes.

But, jokes aside, the article is actually an extensive guide on where to eat, what to see and beaches worth visiting even going to an extra mile by being approved by us locals!

In fact, it opened by stating that Malta is not just a festival spot, stating that “this is what this destination is like beyond stereotypes.”

It praised Malta as being “an open book of human history” since Malta has been occupied by:

The Phoenicians, Cartaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Swabians, Angevins, Aragonese, the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, the French and the British.

The travel guide gave a satirical comment that when visiting Malta, you need to look both ways before crossing the road since we drive on the left side.

However, it also praised our transport system, noting that busses are free, taxies are relatively, and it also highlighted the EU grant funded ferries.

Overall, the article gave various tips to travellers, whether it’s places to visit, places to live or which top restaurants to dine at.

It’s reviews like this where we notice that even if we might not believe it, we might tend take the county we live in for granted.
