Malta’s Regatta Shocker: Mel Gibson Holds Birgu’s Trophy

In a cross-over no one expected in Malta, we got Mel Gibson holding the prestigious Regatta Trophy.

Mel Gibson’s connection with Malta extends beyond this unexpected regatta appearance. Earlier today the Oscar-winning director was spotted in the streets of Mdina, adding more fuel to the fire about ongoing speculation about his involvement in a potential film project.

Earlier this week he had a meeting with Prime Minister Robert Abela, Gibson expressed admiration for the strides Malta has made in its film industry.

Birgu Regatta Club became champions in both Category A and the Women’s Category, and their children’s team claiming victory for the second consecutive year.

The Birgu Regatta, located in Vittoriosa, competes both locally and internationally in traditional boat rowing and machine rowing.

As the reigning champions of the National Regatta held on 8th September 2024. The Maltese National Regatta, a bi-annual event, sees rowers from seven different clubs battling it out over 11 races, each covering 1,040 meters, in the Grand Harbour.

The event, which celebrates both Freedom Day on 31st March and Victory Day on 8th September continues to attract thousands of spectators each year.

Since its revival in 2018 under the presidency of Mr. Stephen Paris, the women’s race has been a highlight, reinstated after a 40-year hiatus.

The winning teams are awarded shields, which they hold for a year, symbolising their triumph in this historic and much-celebrated event.
