Maltese Activist Arrested After Climate Protest Blocks Road To Burning Man For Thousands
A Maltese man was among a group of climate activists arrested in Nevada, USA, yesterday after they blocked the road to Burning Man festival.
The climate blockade led to miles-long traffic and rangers to be called in, with police eventually ramming the blockade and injuring one of the women present.
The blockade, which was staged by Extinction Rebellion and Rave Revolution Global (whose founder is Maltese entrepreneur-turned-activist Tommy Diacono) saw thousands of cars not being able to make it to Burning Man on the festival’s first day.
Various videos shared on Instagram show the lead up before the blockade was destroyed, as hundreds of cars queued in the distance.
However, a number of other people who were also trying to make their way to Reno and surrounding areas were also affected by the blockade, calling in Nevada rangers.
In videos from the scene uploaded by Freedom News TV, Diacono can be seen angrily clapping back at drivers who tried to forcefully remove the blockade, arguing that the US being a democracy allowed them such kinds of protests.
At one point, one patrol car rammed through the blockade, nearly hitting the protestors who had chained themselves to the structure.
“While I did have conversations with some people in the crowd who empathised with the climate cause, the majority of the Burners on the road were outraged and did not think this protest was effective at all,” Guardian journalist Michelle Lhooq – who was embedded with the group of activists – wrote on social media earlier today.
“This was an eye-opening look for me into how many Burners only appreciate radicalism if it doesn’t inconvenience their fun, as well as the limits of civil disobedience to effect social change,” Lhooq continued.
