A 32-year-old Maltese man has been caught with 231kg of cannabis in Pozzallo by the Guardia di Finanza of Ragusa. He was caught as he was boarding the Jean De La Valette catamaran heading back to Malta, Italian media reported.
In the reports, the driver was said to work for a “well-known Maltese transport company”. He had been driving in a lorry truck, when two dogs had raised the alarm.
The lorry was stopped and searched, and all goods were ordered to be unloaded. Kilos of frozen food items were removed from the lorry, and hidden within five large packages were 114 packages of cannabis, vacuum-sealed.
The Maltese driver has been remanded in custody
He will now be charged with the trafficking of a significant amount of cannabis in the Ragusa district.
An investigation is currently underway to discover the origin of the plant. It is estimated that the street value of the amount found could be over 1.5 million euros.
