Maltese people travelling to and from Gatwick airport woke up to a nasty surprise this morning as unidentified drones spotted over the runway led to all flights being suspended.

Speaking to Lovin Malta, several Maltese people described scenes of turmoil as they showed up at Gatwick for their flights down to Malta. Large queues have formed in the check-in areas and it is as yet unclear if they will be allowed to check in and board flights.

Some airport officials have said the delays could last up to 24 hours.

The drones were first spotted at 9pm Wednesday evening and the runway was closed down until 3am Thursday morning. Shortly after re-opening, the drones re-appeared.

According to the latest reports, the drones are still airborne in what The Telegraph is calling a “cat and mouse game” with the police. Gatwick Chief Operating Officer Chris Woodroofe was quoted as saying the drones couldn’t be shot down due to the risk of stray bullets causing harm.

This morning’s Air Malta flight to Gatwick was cancelled but passengers were still able to make the trip to London by flying to Heathrow airport instead.

Over 100,000 people travel through Gatwick every day and at least 10,000 people are looking to be affected with the flights suspensions.
