A 37-year-old man from Pieta’ suffered serious injuries after he had to be pulled out of his burning car in Ħamrun last night.

The incident happened at around 9:45pm on Sunday, when a police officer on his way to Floriana noticed a burning Ford Ka’ with the driver still in it. Helping the man get out of the wreckage and calling the emergency services, the police officer was quickly assisted by other officers from the Ħamrun Police Station and the Rapid Intervention Unit.

The fire had started after, for an unknown reason, the 37-year-old driver lost control of the car and crashed into a tree. The small vehicle sustained heavy damages as a result of the impact and resulting flames, but the fire was very quickly contained by members of the Civil Protection Department.

The driver was taken to Mater Dei and certified as having sustained serious injuries. A police investigation is underway.
