A man named Hisham Ali Abuagilla was sentenced to 14 years in prison, fined €4,000, and had all his property confiscated after admitting to attempting to murder a Sliema resident back in August 2021.

The 40-year-old Libyan national was residing in Sliema before his final sentencing earlier this afternoon. He pleaded guilty to his crimes in hopes of receiving a reduced sentence.

In addition to his sentencing and fines, his property was confiscated, and he owes €14,600 in court expenses. Abuagilla was arrested after a 10-day manhunt when a connection to the attempted murder of Luke Daniel Jones was established. He was also charged with inflicting grievous injury, breaching the peace, and carrying a knife in public without a permit.

Upon his arrest, he was found in possession of a pocket knife, as well as a number of substances such as cocaine, cannabis, and ecstasy. Further investigations uncovered more drugs hidden inside his home.

Jones testified in court, stating the incident occurred while he was drinking with two colleagues at a bar in Paceville. After the bar closed, one of his friends suggested they meet up with Abuagilla in Sliema.

Upon meeting him, a fight broke out between the victim’s friend and Abuagilla. When Jones attempted to separate the two, he was stabbed six times in the face, neck, chest, and back.
