Massive Diesel Spill Suffocates Grand Harbour A Day After Yacht Catches Fire

The Grand Harbour is currently contaminated by a huge diesel spill that originated from yesterday’s Kalkara yacht fire and has not yet been cleaned up.

Photojournalist Rene Rossignaud posted photos on his Facebook page of the shiny diesel floating on the surface of the water by the coast.

“The spill can be seen from Kalkara bay all the way to the breakwater and it looks like nothing is being done to contain it,” he said.

A man, who wants to remain anonymous, told Lovin Malta that he complained to the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) about the diesel spill yesterday but was referred to several offices before eventually being told to contact the Armed Forces.

He said that he saw Transport Malta officials taking a photo of the spill this morning but that no action has been taken as of this afternoon.

The fibreglass yacht caught fire yesterday, letting off a plume of smoke that could be seen from several parts of Malta. The cause of the fire is as yet unknown.
