MCAST Students To Protest Ongoing Dispute Between MUT And Government
Tensions continue to rise on MCAST campuses, as students prepare to stage their third protest this year to yet again demand a resolution to the ongoing dispute between the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) and governmental bodies.
On Friday 11th October at 11.45am, students will rally in front of the MCAST Paola canteen to protest the situation, spearheaded by former KSM Vice President Emma Brownrigg Fenech.
The latest addition of directives which will be effective from tomorrow, 4th October, just four days after the beginning of the MCAST scholastic year, continues to add tension between lecturers and students, who are both affected by these regulations.
Strict limits on communication, restriction of extracurricular activities, and the withholding of academic feedback, leaving students in uncertainty regarding their progress.
“MCAST students and lecturers are being treated unfairly, and we will not stand by while our education is compromised,” said Brownrigg Fenech. “Students deserve clarity on their academic future, and lecturers deserve fair wages. We are protesting to end this injustice.”
The outrage persists when one takes into consideration that Education Minister Clifton Grima had allocated €27 million to support private schools, including €3 million specifically aimed at preventing fee hikes in independent schools.
However, similar funding is yet to be provided for MCAST lecturers’ salaries, the root of the current dispute.
