Mdina’s Bastions Keep Getting Eerie Power Cuts And Nobody Knows Exactly Why
Mdina’s lit-up bastions and cathedral are amongst the most iconic skylines of the Maltese islands. However, the view we’re all so used to has been vanishing periodically over the last couple of weeks. And no, there are no black holes involved.
Over the past two weeks, it was reported that Mdina had been getting frequent power cuts. On certain nights, these mysterious blackouts would happen every couple of minutes, persisting all throughout the night.
Lovin Malta contacted Mdina’s mayor, Peter Sant Mandunca, to clarify what’s going down in the Silent (and at times Dark) City.
First of all, it’s important to note that the fortifications and the Cathedral are the only things which are being affected by these power cuts. Both house and street lights within the fortified city are doing fine, as they’re not rigged to the same system and are run by the Mdina Local Council.
Both the fortifications and the cathedral’s lighting are not taken care of by the council, but by the government… much like the rest of the fortifications around the island.
Enemalta have been working hard to see what’s causing these blackouts, but since the system is so complex and large, tracing the issue is proving to be more difficult than previously thought.
Following a sudden black out, the lights of the bastions would slowly switch back on. On certain nights, it was reported by witnesses that this would happen well over 15 times.
Government workers even headed up to Mdina this morning to check out the issue, but for now, it seems like they’re only meeting dead ends. It is thought that the issue at hand might be a voltage drop or a fault in the wiring which might be triggering this shortage.
At the time of writing, Enemalta are still trying to figure out what the problem is.
