Mercury 2.0? Joseph Portelli Could Build Two 35-Storey Towers In Qawra, New Report Alleges

Developer magnate Joseph Portelli could very well be gearing up for a new project similar to Mercury Towers, this time in Qawra, a new report has alleged.

According to The Shift News, Portelli’s latest venture could see him building two 35-storey towers in the locality: the maximum allowed by law. In fact, Qawra is one of only five localities around the island where buildings higher than 11 storeys may be allowed to be built.

Property agents affiliated with Portelli reportedly revealed that the new development could be set to be planned “behind the Big Ben apartments”, with some allegedly describing the project as “similar to the Mercury Towers project in Paceville but with different styling”.

No application for a similar project has been submitted as of yet, but The Shift News reported that the towers could be built along Andrew Cunningham Street, close to the Salina Nature Reserve and Kennedy Grove park.

The site has seen a number of development attempts in the past, with proposals in 2001, 2004 and 2007 all being either withdrawn by the applicants or downright stopped at the Planning Directorate.

When contacted for a comment by The Shift, both Joseph Portelli and J Portelli Projects CEO Claire Gauci Borda reportedly did not answer.
