A father who wanted to give his imprisoned son some extra food ended up locked up himself after a series of unfortunate events that left his son, assumedly, hungry.

68-year-old John Bartolo from Mosta visited Corradino Correctional Facility on Sunday morning, only to find out that the guardsmen had not been informed of his visit. Bartolo began to verbally argue with the guards after finding out he would not be allowed to visit his son. Eventually, four more guards were called in to control the man after the situation got out of hand.

Bartolo was arrested on Sunday evening, kept in custody overnight, and charged the next morning with violently resisting arrest, slightly injuring a police officer, breaching the public peace, swearing in public and disobeying police orders. The courts found that he had actually committed these crimes while serving a suspended sentence.

His defence lawyer, David Gatt, pleaded not guilty to the charges on behalf of his client, and pointed out that the father was just trying to give his son food and not smuggle in illicit items or drugs, before requesting bail for his client.

With no objections from prosecuting inspector Paul Camilleri, duty magistrate Astrid May Grima granted Bartolo bail on the condition that he does not visit or approach Corradino Correctional Facility anymore.
