Naples’ New Installation Sparks Debate, Echoes Malta’s Luqa Monument

In Naples, a new public art installation in Piazza Municipio has been stirring up some lively debate.

Designed by renowned artist Gaetano Pesce, the sculpture represents the iconic figure of Pulcinella.

However, it’s not Pulcinella’s traditional mask or famous gestures that are grabbing attention—it’s the statue’s distinctly phallic shape!

The sculpture was meant to be a celebration of Naples’ beloved theatrical figure, Pulcinella, but locals and passersby seem to have their eyes on something else entirely. Many can’t help but point out the statue’s resemblance to a certain body part, sparking both amusement and controversy across social media. Some see it as a playful, bold statement in true Neapolitan fashion, while others think it’s a step too far.

This Neapolitan controversy immediately brings to mind Malta’s own eyebrow-raising monument in Luqa, which gained its own viral fame for similar reasons.

The Luqa monument, initially designed to symbolise regeneration, quickly became the subject of jokes and memes due to its unintended phallic resemblance. Much like the situation in Naples, the public couldn’t resist pointing out the shape, leading to plenty of laughter and light-hearted discussion.

As Naples embraces its Pulcinella statue with a mix of pride and playful mockery, it’s clear that the statue has already succeeded in one thing—getting people talking, much like Malta’s own infamous Luqa monument.
