The leader of the Nationalist Party, Bernard Grech and other Members of Parliament from the opposition addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding a couple who withdrew their children from a government primary school after discovering their teacher was gay.

Grech opened his statement on Facebook by highlighting the importance of education in fostering respect, responsibility, and holistic development among students.

“Every investment we make in our country should be centred on people. Investment in education is no exception. Our education system must be one that helps students develop holistically,” Grech said.

Grech reiterated the Nationalist Party’s commitment to ensuring no parent feels forced to transfer their child due to diversity in schools.

“The Nationalist Party believes that classroom inclusion prepares students for a diverse world and is crucial for building a healthy society,” Grech added, “No parent should feel the need to transfer their child from a school due to the diversity of a teacher.”

Meanwhile, PN MP and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Claudette Buttigieg, mirrored Grech’s response, stating that decisions such as the ones taken by the parents “do not protect them, however, they instil a sense of discrimination that due to their innocence, do not understand the meaning of such a thing.”

PN MP Graziella Attard Previ spoke up about how sexual orientation does not dictate a teacher’s or any person’s professionalism.

“Children need to be raised in an inclusive environment so they not only appreciate but also respect the diversity around them,” Attard Previ said, “We must continue to work towards tolerance, inclusion, and diversity.”

Earlier today, Members from the Labour Party also voiced their own opinions on the matter, with Parliamentary Secretary for Equality saying that such an act “we still have work to do,” while Education Minister Clifton Grima defended the school and praised it for employing teachers of diverse backgrounds.

Discourse surrounding this situation is still ongoing and greatly increasing, as a wide majority of the country is unanimously speaking out in solidarity with the teacher involved.
