As we welcomed the new year, the Maltese Police Force carried out over 160 traffic control inspections to ensure road safety during the festive period.

In fact, no traffic incidents were reported on New Year’s Eve, and no serious incidents occurred during the holidays.

The inspections, which began in the first week of December, took place daily at various times across Malta and Gozo with the aim to minimise serious traffic accidents.

The vast majority of vehicles stopped were compliant with traffic regulations. Where violations were found, immediate action was taken.

Inspections also included checks for valid licenses and insurance, breathalyser tests, and vehicle searches by police dogs.

Throughout the 160 inspections, around 4,500 vehicles were stopped, resulting in more than 600 contraventions. These varied from driving without a license, use of mobile phones while driving, speeding, not wearing seat belts, to vehicles with illegally tinted glass.

Several vehicles were towed for lack of a valid license. Y Plate vehicles were also checked for related permits, along with verification of residence documents.

The road inspections were coordinated by the Police Force, with the assistance of officers from Transport Malta and these will continue throughout the year with the aim of safer roads in Malta and Gozo.

The Police Force also issued a statement thanking the public for their cooperation.

“The Police Force thanks everyone for the cooperation during these days of festivities we had safe roads and without any serious incident,” the statement read.

“Our appeal always remains one: do not drive under the influence of alcohol; do not drive at excessive speed but carefully; and do not use any electronic devices while driving. The Police Force wishes everyone a happy new year,” the Police Spokesman concluded.
