One Fatal Road Accident Every Three Weeks In Malta For 2018

There were 18 deaths caused by traffic accidents, just under one road fatality every three weeks, in Malta in 2018, the latest NSO statistics show.

This does represent a very slight improvement when compared with previous years, with one less fatality than what was recorded in 2017 (17), and five less than the record reached in 2016 (23).

The total number of road traffic accidents also dropped slightly to 14,378, however, this still translates to roughly 39 accidents per day.

Men account for the majority of injured persons in traffic accidents, at roughly 65%, with the majority of injured persons falling in the 26 to 40 age bracket.

The overwhelming majority of accidents take place in Birkirkara (1,261)

With regards to the last four months of the year specifically, the largest number of road traffic accidents involved in passenger cars and motorcycles. A total of 56 pedestrians and five cyclists were hit by motor vehicles.

The issue surrounding road safety has begun to gather steam over the last few years, with the roughly 50,000 cars that have been introduced to Maltese roads contributing significantly to the increase of road accidents.

Drink-driving remains a pressing issue in Malta, with last year’s incident involving a 20-year-old driver losing control, injuring eight people, and killing one, still fresh in the memory.
