Precisely 10,120 contraventions were issued to e-scooter riders between January and August 2023, according to data presented in Parliament by Minister for Home Affairs Byron Camilleri.

July saw the highest number of fines, with a total of 2,006 issued, whereas April had the lowest figures with 261. Throughout the first eight months of 2023, 4,811 fines were issued for bad parking, and 5,158 for the obstruction of pavements.

The document also listed down the fines by locality, with Sliema seeing the highest number of scooter-related contraventions and St Paul’s Bay, St Julian and Gżira being close contenders.

The documents were tabled by Camilleri in response to parliamentary questions posed by PN MP Graziella Attard Previ asking for the data.

These questions were prompted by a surge of complaints regarding the increase of e-scooters and the recklessness of the riders. In fact, other PN MPs tabled these objections to parliament, including letters by residents, as well as photos of scooters obstructing the pavements to substantiate their frustrations.

In October, the Transport Ministry announced a ban on rental electric scooters as of 1st March 2024 because of the “disturbances” sustained by communities.

However, private e-scooters will still be allowed.
