Over 97% Of Malta’s Nurses And Midwives Reject Government’s Financial Package
A whopping 97.6% of Malta’s nurses and midwives have rejected the government’s most recent financial package which saw the latest strike halted.
The state’s package was brought forward after the Malta Union for Midwives and Nurses staged a strike that extended over three weeks over the new sectorial agreement.
The industrial dispute was then withdrawn after the government announced that it will be proposing a new package to address issues such as nurses’ and midwives’ salaries and working conditions, however, it seems it could possibly resume again.
“During the extraordinary general conference, 97.6% of the nurses and midwives voted against while 1% voted in favour. 1.4% were invalid votes. Present were 804 nurses and midwives,” the MUMN said in a statement this morning.
“This amount was the largest crowd ever attending a general conference since the union’s foundation in 1996.”
The MUMN will be holding a press conference this morning at 9.30am in front of the union’s premises in Qormi, where it will explain why the nurses and midwives rejected the package.
Do you think Malta’s nurses and midwives deserve better working conditions?
