Overdevelopment In Malta Is So Bad A Heritage Organisation Has Literally Given Up

The Sliema Heritage Society has officially given up its fight against the constant development in the area after an appeal to prevent the destruction of a ‘Grade B+ protection’ building was rejected.

In a post on Facebook, the group announced that it will be turning its “limited resources” towards education, in the hopes of inspiring future change.

“We apologise for sounding defeatist, such a decision was not taken lightly.”

The appeal by the Sliema local council was rejected by the Planning Tribunal, who instead gave the go-ahead for the building to be converted into a guesthouse. According to a report by Times of Malta, the project will add three new floors on top of the building while retaining its facade.

Several other NGOs, organisations and experts on Heritage spoke out against the conversion project, but the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage presented no objections to the plans.

The Sliema Heritage Society, which was founded in 2010, has been fighting against the destruction of old townhouses and buildings in the area, but has been disheartened by the “general disinterest” surrounding these issues.
