The St Clare College secondary state school in Pembroke has reported two cases of violent bullying to the police after parents raised concerns that the situation is getting out of hand.

A parent recently warned on Facebook that his son is too scared to go to school as he is being bullied by a gang of foreign students and flagged rumours that some of these students have taken to carrying knives on them.

“Do we need to hear of murder or a disability being the end result before anything is done?” the parent asked. “When do the school authorities pluck up the courage to create a safe environment and teach our kids about morality and respect before focusing on academic topics in a militant way (at times)?”

Other parents also voiced their concerns, with one mother warning two foreign boys had choked her son and slammed his head against the wall and another mother flagging how her son was attacked by two foreign boys and left unconscious.

Lovin Malta sent questions to the school’s administration, which were responded by a spokesperson for the Education Ministry.

“The school administration has met/communicated with the parent in question to acknowledge her concerns and to explain a way forward,” the spokesperson said. “The school treats all cases of violence with zero tolerance and these are reported to the police. As a school, we provide psychological help and all the full support necessary for the well-being of the victim of bullying or physical violence.”

“In terms of the aggressors, apart from possible steps taken by the police, we work on their behaviour and together with parents identify the source of their negative conduct. The school will not shy away from any action it feels it needs to take for the benefit of the rest of the students, and the perpetrators themselves. The school, as well as the college, holds dear the values of respect, community and well-being of students and we will take all the necessary steps to safeguard these values.”

Education Commissioner Charles Caruana Carabez recently confirmed he intends to investigate the alleged violent gangs at the school and has urged parents whose children were attacked to contact him privately.
