Xarabank host Peppi Azzopardi has just given some Maltese people the telling off many would agree they deserve.

Taking to the popular Friday night TV show’s Facebook page yesterday evening, Azzopardi shared a shocking observation; people in Malta made a big fuss about an Imam in Malta calling for local butchers to produce their own halal meat (something he also doesn’t want to see happen) but nobody noticed the death of 170 refugees in the Mediterranean last Saturday.

Peppi said that when the news spread that the Imam Mohammed El Sadi asked that butchers kill their animals according to Islamic law, his phone didn’t stop ringing as people contacted him to express their rage of such an idea.

And he agrees. He doesn’t think it’s fair or humane to treat animals like that. So it’s not the people’s anger that he’s got a problem with. He’s got an issue with the fact that 170 people drowned, died or went missing in two separate shipwrecks in the weekend, and nobody was angry about it. Nobody called to express their grief, anger or frustration that it’s 2019 and people are still dying when crossing the Mediterranean to get to Europe.

“There was nothing about it on Facebook and nobody called to tell us to host a program about it,” a visibly emotional Peppi says in the video. “How does nobody notice this?”

“We have turned the Mediterranean into a cemetery”

The Mediterranean has a history that’s rich and crucial to the development of many, many countries, Malta being one of them. Yet last year, 2,262 people lost their lives attempting to reach Europe in this same sea.
