Lovin Malta has received reports that a 1 by 1 metre swastika has appeared on the shoreline of Birgu. One reader, Virginija Preskienytė, contacted Lovin Malta with the images that show the massive anti-semitic sign emblazoned on the rocks near the beach.
The sign has appeared just beyond Fort St. Angelo’s, below a window cut into a rock, on the beach. It is not known when the symbol appeared.
The swastika was an ancient Hindu symbol that represented good luck before being co-opted by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Regime in 1930s Germany. While it used to represent good values, it is most commonly recognised as the symbol connected to the Axis in World War 2, and is used as a hate symbol in the modern world.
While the Nazi’s swastika actually faces right, and the original Hindu symbol faces left, the latest Birgu carving still raised concerns and pictures of it were sent to Lovin Malta.
When Lovin Malta contacted the Maltese police force they said that no reports had been made regarding the symbol in Birgu, and Lovin Malta forwarded all materials to them for their perusal.
