PN MP Raises Alarm Over Proposal For Gas Storage Facility Few Metres Away From Lija Primary School
PN MP Justin Schembri has raised alarm over a development application for a gas storage facility a few metres away from the primary school in Lija.
Posting to social media, Schembri shared the letter that he has just sent to Education Minister Clifton Grima, the Permanent Secretary, and the Head of the College Network, to express his concern. He has also brought forward a parliamentary question.
“It is unacceptable if this permit is approved, just a few metres away from a school, and I’m asking you to do everything in your power so that this permit is rejected,” Schembri wrote in the letter.
Speaking with Lovin Malta, Schembri said that “I need answers. People need answers”.
“I am very concerned. As spokesperson for Education mainly and also as a representative of Lija, I believe this should never go ahead. It seems to me that the main gate where the project will take place is not more than 10 meters away from the school gate,” Schembri continued.
The permit, 00973/23, details the proposal for a new bulk LPG storage facility, within a residential complex situated along Triq Robert Mifsud Bonnici in Lija.
The application was filed in January, and it is currently awaiting recommendation from the Planning Authority board.
Meanwhile, Enemalta has already objected to the permit, “in view that there it is in close proximity to our infrastructure and installation to be installed is hazardous”.
No other objections were made from ERA, Transport Malta, or the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage.
