George Degiorgio, one of the main suspects charged with the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, has claimed that he is part of a frame-up by the police where they are attempting to find evidence to justify his arrest after the arrest already occurred.

The claim was made after an official who presented evidence relating to the court case said he was not “morally certain” the boat being shown was indeed Degorigio’s boat The Maia, The Independent has reported.

William Cuschieri, Degiorgio’s lawyer, said this while filing a court application Monday morning asking the First Hall of the Civil Court in its Constitutional jurisdiction to admit that his client’s right to a fair hearing had been breached.

“[It is] evident that the prosecution not only did not have proof that Degiorgio was on board the particular vessel, but did not even have proof that it was the particular vessel that appeared on the footage,” Cuschieri said.

The Malta police force had made a request for court experts to identify any and all boats that had entered or left the Grand Harbour between 2:30pm and 3:30pm on the 16th of October, 2017. They were asked to then compare these boats with a photograph of the Maia.

Cuschieri called this procedure out, saying: “here we are talking about a boat that is unrecognisable…”, continuing on to say that the request was “nothing but a suggestive question so that the experts confirm the pretext upon which the accused was arrested.”

“The behaviour and request of the prosecution, which took place now around ten months after his arraignment under arrest on a supposition without any evidence, is nothing but an attempt at a frame up in his regard,” he ended.

Caruana Galizia had been murdered in a car bomb in Bidnija in an attack that shocked the nation. Police suspect that George Degiorgio – known as Iċ-Ċiniż – and his brother Alfred Degirogio – known as Il-Fulu – are behind the murder.
